Participating in sports activities has beneficial effects on health, however, traumatic orofacial injuries suffered while playing sports are becoming increasingly common. The occurrence of traumatic orofacial injuries in athletes can cause emotional exhaustion, aesthetic and functional impairment, as well as financial impact. It is important to emphasize that to prevent injuries resulting from these sports activities, the use of mouthguards is essential, offering protection to dental and periodontal structures, acting as a shock absorber, dissipating the impact force through surrounding orofacial structures. The mouthguard performed by the dentist is an adequate and effective way to prevent trauma. Thus, this article aims to describe the clinical-laboratory protocol, highlighting the manufacture of custom protectors (type III protectors - personalized and type IV protectors - multilaminated personalized) as a means of protection from dental trauma during sports practices. Based on the description of the step-by-step, it can be observed the particularities and specificities in the manufacture of type III and IV mouthguards and that the manufacture of type III mouthguards constitutes a relatively simple practice and is easily accessible to the clinician .
